Jennie Irene Edwards Wilson, 98, of Catawba passed away at her home on April 7, 2017. She was born on February 16, 1919 in Catawba County to the late George Ivey and Jennie Sarah Jane Edwards. Irene was very family oriented being the 9th child of 10 children. She was the last surviving child of George and Jennie Edwards. Irene graduated from the Catawba County School system with an additional diploma earned through the Commercial Department. She trained to be a secretary then worked in the schools and transportation industry. During World War II she was trained as a civilian aircraft spotter by the U.S. Army and worked with the Aircraft Warning Services. Irene was a proud homemaker who loved to work in her garden. She loved to harvest and can the fruits of her gardening labor be it green beans, tomatoes, or strawberries. Irene was a fine cook known for her chicken & dumplings, chicken pie and her cakes. She was a faithful life long member of Smyrna United Church of Christ. Irene was held many church offices and was heavily involved in the Women's Guild. She was recognized for 25 or more years of service by the Church Women of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her loving husband Floyd Thomas (Toby) Wilson, one daughter Ann W. Tallant, seven brothers; Hob, Martin, George, Floyd, Johonny, Arthur, and Eli Edwards, two sisters; Nonie Beatty and Ellen Travis, all of Catawba County, NC.
Irene is survived by one son, Carl Wilson (Elwanda) of Catawba, NC, granddaughters Kellie W. Wesson (Mark) of Claremont, Molly T. Lamp (Johnny) of Claremont, and Sarah W. Milburn (Jack) of Maiden, NC, one grandson, Lee R. Tallant ( Marlena) of Newton, NC, one son-in-law, Lynn Tallent of Newton, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Wilson family will receive friends on April 11, 2017 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Sherrills Ford. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in the sanctuary of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Pastor Ken Curtis will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Smyrna United Church of Christ Cemetery.
