Joan Cornwell Benfield, age 83, of Maiden, North Carolina passed away on May 5, 2018 at the Brian Center of Lincolnton.

Joan was born in Catawba County on September 20, 1934.  She was the last surviving child of the late George Cornwell and Della Rogers Cornwell.  Her husband, Joe C. Benfield, sisters, Mary Alice Cornwell, Kathleen Henry, Bobbie Spake, and brothers, Paul “Sonny” Cornwell, and Frank Cornwell all preceded her in death.  In recent years of declining health, she longed to be reunited with her husband, family, and friends gone before.

She was a member of Cornerstone Church and the Prayer Warriors Sunday School Class.  She loved her church and her family.  Joan devoted her life to providing for her children and grandchildren.  She remained a fighter until the end, and her sassy and tenacious spirit is a cherished legacy to those she leaves behind.

She is survived by three daughters, Debbie (David) Parker, Tammi (Chris) Schronce, Lori Benfield, and one son, Rick Cruse.  Also surviving are three grandchildren, Joe (Amy) Fincannon, Tara (Rob) Coburn, Jessica Parker, and three great-grandchildren, Taylor Fincannon, Alex Fincannon, and Hanna Coburn.  Her memory is also cherished by numerous nieces and nephews.  Our hope is that I Corinthians 15:55 provides comfort in the coming days.

The Reverend Charles Curtis will conduct a celebration of life on Friday, May 11th, 2:00pm at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home in Maiden.  The family will receive friends at 1:00pm prior to the service.   A private internment will follow.

A special thank you to the Brian Center of Lincolnton and Hospice of Lincoln County for their comfort and care.  Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.

Our deepest sympathy to the family. When someone we love dies it causes Pain and sorrow. Though we personally have never seen anyone raised from the dead, we have certain Scriptures that assure us of the resurrection. Jesus said: “The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” (John 5:28, 29). We can also, comforted by the hope expressed by the upright man Job: He will call; The dead will answer (Job 14:13-15). To know that there is a better future awaiting those we have lost in death, where the issues, such as sickness and death that plague us today, will be things of the past is comforting. I hope these scriptures give you strength to endure the difficult days ahead.
